You’re 30. Why Focusing on making money right now is your biggest mistake

In a world obsessed with “30 Under 30” lists and instant viral success, it is easy to feel like you are falling behind if you aren’t a millionaire by the time you leave your twenties. The pressure to earn high salaries immediately is immense.

But after 46 years in business—starting as a technical assistant and ending as the founder of a market-leading company—I have a controversial piece of advice for you: If you are between 20 and 40 years old, stop prioritizing your paycheck.

If you focus solely on making money now, you might actually be sabotaging your chances of becoming truly wealthy later. Here is why.

The 4-Phase Career Plan

Life and business are not sprints; they are marathons. To navigate this long journey successfully, you need a map. Through my experience, I have identified a 4-Phase Career Plan that most successful professionals follow, consciously or not.

  • Phase 1 (0–20): Schooling and foundation.
  • Phase 2 (20–40): Learning a profession and becoming an expert.
  • Phase 3 (40–60): Capitalizing on expertise (Making real money).
  • Phase 4 (60–80): Reaping the rewards and giving back.

The “mistake” most young professionals make is trying to live in Phase 3 when they are still in Phase 2.

The Long Game

True wealth is built on value. In Phase 2, you are building your “value engine.” In Phase 3, you turn that engine on full power.

Don’t trade your potential for quick cash. Use your 30s to become the person everyone wants to hire, partner with, or invest in.
